Why The Denver Broncos Won’t Trade Cutler for The Detroit Lions’ No. 1 Pick

Twice since 1990 has the 1st overall pick been traded. Both times, it was for another pick in the top 5, and coincidentally both times the Chargers were involved (Eli for Rivers, and Vick for LT).

The reason for this is simple: guaranteed Money.  Jake Long is the top paid tackle in the league. Jamarcus Russel is paid almost as much as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.  

This year's pick will be guaranteed over $30 million.

No team wants to pick first overall.  The success rate isn't high, and the cost is enormous. Guessing wrong on this can set a franchise back years, (trust me on this, I'm an expert—a Browns fan—we picked Brown and Couch back-to-back with the first overall picks).

The Broncos very well may trade with the Lions for Cutler, but expect the twentieth, not the first overall pick to be the No. 1 involved.
