... to spend his first day on the job discussing labor talks with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
In a telephone conference call with reporters on Monday, less than 12 hours after he was elected to lead North America's most powerful sports union, Smith said it was his intention to speak to Goodell by phone as soon as possible.
"I hope to speak with him today," Smith said. "It's my hope that our first conversation of the collective bargaining agreement and other issues starts today."
The 45-year-old Smith, a Washington, D.C.-based attorney, succeeds the late Gene Upshaw as union boss following an election by the league's 32 player representatives in Hawaii on Sunday night.
