... The defense was truly the backbone of this team in 2008.  Defense is what carried the Eagles into the playoffs for the seventh time in nine seasons.

Everyone who pays any attention to the NFL knows that defensive coordinator Jim Johnson is the heart and soul of the Eagles coaching staff.  His exotic blitzing schemes are legendary, and for the most part, quarterbacks don’t have a fun time against his attack.

Early in 2008, the defense seemed to be lacking a bit.  They gave up 34 points against Dallas, but followed that up with an impressive effort against the Pittsburgh Steelers, sacking Ben Roethlisberger nine times, including a safety.

Johnson had one of his best coaching seasons, figuring out the optimal way to deploy an aging Brian Dawkins, and milking a seventh Pro Bowl selection out of him.  He found creative ways to defend against the run by using three safeties on...
