It's also a high-pressure pick. If you are picking first, you are obviously not in great shape as a franchise and this pick is being relied on to bring hope to the teams fans and the organization as a whole.
It's a pick that is going to have a lot of money invested in it also so getting bang for your buck is vital.

In the case of the Lions, with a new GM in Martin Mayhew and a new head coach in Jim Schwartz owing and using the number one pick is the focal point of their attempt to turn the Lions fortunes around.

However, history is not on their side. The Lions have picked in the top half of the draft more often than not in recent years. In the last 25 years the Lions have owed a top 10 pick 14 times!
