Gunslinger to the Vikings: Is Brett Favre the True Answer for Minnesota?

If you have turned on a TV in the past 3 months or so, you have most likely heard yet another story about how Brett Favre might return to the NFL for his 19th season.
After going to New York last year to play for the Jets, Favre now wants to go to the Minnesota Vikings.
He says he still has enough in him to play, but at the tender age of 39, it dosn’t seem like its fathomable to think a team could really succeed with him under center.
I can already hear every Favre supporter from coast to coast saying, “but look at all the records he holds. He’s still got that gunslinger attitude and can lead any team to prominence.”
Really?
Yes he holds the records for things along the lines of touchdowns (464), completions (5720 of 9280), and yards (65,127), but less we forget, he also holds records like these:
1. Career playoff losses as starting QB: 10
2. Career playoff interceptions thrown: 28
3. Career interceptions thrown: 310
So why should a playoff contender waste their time and money on the hastle that is Brett Favre?
Do the vikings plan to tell you their two quarterbacks, Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels, who have been competing for the starting job that, hey, we’re going to go with a 40 year old for one year then maybe we can give you guys a chance next year?
If they do this, they can basically kiss the money they have committed to Jackson and Rosenfels goodbye, because who wants to play for a team that thinks someone almost twice your age can do a better job than you?
In comparsion between the quarterback tandem that the Vikings already have and Favre, we of course go to the numbers.
Last year, Jackson and Rosenfels went for 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions combined while Favre went for 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
So there was not much a difference there last year.
Jackson rushed for 145 yards in only nine games last year while Favre went for 43 yards in 16 games.
When your quarterback leaves the possibility of a sneak out there, it loosens up coverage on your receivers due to the fact that a linebacker will need to stay low to protect against the sneak. With someone like Percy Harvin that is coming in, a looser defense is going to help a lot since he is very dangerous in the open field.
So why are fans and some analysts saying it is such a big difference to have Favre than the quarterbacks that are already there?
This writer can’t see it.
If I were the Vikings GM, I would either trade for a young talent, or breed the talent you already have.
I would by no means bring in someone who has only one super bowl ring in to take over and have the possibility of demoralizing my entire quarterback crew of the future.
Also, why would I want the headache of dealing with the weekly coverage of the Brett Favre story? We know the egos that are in locker rooms, and no one is going to want to deal with that.
The one thing that would really make me keep Favre from my team is that, in my opinion, he is only coming to the Vikings to be able to play the Packers twice a year.
He says it’s because the system is exactly the same in Minnesota, but I don’t believe that in the slightest.
No man is big enough to not want to prove the people that thought he was done wrong.
The Vikings are already equipped with arguably the best running back and one of the finest defenses in all the league.
Build for the future, not the now.
