They had no kick returner. They were stuck in neutral with Reno Mahe returning punts. First-year punter Sav Rocca was wildly inconsistent. Former Pro Bowler David Akers was unreliable.

Field position is a key factor in the NFL. Most of the time it starts with special teams. 

In 2007 the Eagles lost the field position battle all season. Their average starting field position was their own 29.2 yard line, while opponent's started at their own 31.6. They only won field position four times, and won three of those games.

They ranked just 24th in the league in both kick return average (21.7), and punt return average (8.1). They were just 29th in the league in net punting average (34.9).

In 2008, they successfully improved in every area.
