Servanthood means helping others because they need it.

Selfishness, on the other hand, means helping others because you want to.

I’m not suggesting that Owens actually cares about the other 10 guys in the huddle. Empathy is as empathy does, and T.O.’s career has been an exercise in unrepentant narcissism. But let’s not lose sight of what’s really important. In a league where nothing says “I love you” like a well-met incentive clause, the only values that matter are the ones they show on the scoreboard.

A loyal dog defends the hand that feeds it.

A loyal jock delights the club that pays him.

If Owens makes the Bills better by looking out for No. 81, he isn’t likely to hear much griping from the grous...
