In 2008, though, the team needed to bounce back from a disappointing season. In 2007, the Eagles ranked 18th in passing defense, allowing 215.6 yards per game. Even worse, they ranked last in the league with just 11 interceptions.
The first move the team made was diving head-first into free agency to sign cornerback Asante Samuel to a six-year, $57 million contract.
Samuel picked off 16 passes over his previous two seasons in New England, plus three in the playoffs, two returned for touchdowns. He was brought in to be the play-maker the team was lacking.
Not solely because of the signing, the team did improve in '08. They moved up to third in the league in passing defense, allowing just 182.1 yards per game. They also moved up to 11th in interceptions with 15.
