Excitement at OTAs: Two-Minute Drills Produce an Offensive Spark

The two-minute drill has been the soup de jour the last two days for the 49ers at the OTAs.
Brandon Jones said it best on Monday : “The last two minutes are the most important period of a game, whether it’s before the end of the first half or at the end of the game; it can decide the final outcome”
The battles between the two sides of the ball during these drills have actually been pretty exciting to follow.
In what read as a methodical drive by Shaun Hill, the offense marched the ball 54 yards but was eventually held to a 4th and goal on the 6-yard line. On the fourth down play, Hill hit a leaping Vernon Davis in the back of the end zone with a perfectly thrown ball down the middle, leaving only one second left on the clock.
The play brought extreme excitement to the offense, more than one would expect from OTA drills.
Later in the drills, Alex Smith, running the second team offense, finagled his way down the field and managed to set up the team for a drill winning field goal. (Score scenarios were given at the start of the each drive.)
During the second day of two-minute drills, the 49ers offense once again showed promise providing both quarterbacks with another chance to flash a little talent.
Hill exhibited poise moving the offense down the field and ultimately hit Dominique Zeigler in the end zone for a touchdown. Alex Smith got his squad out of jam on a 4th and 10 hitting Vernon Davis over the middle for 30-yards, which seemed to get the offense fired up.
If both quarterbacks keep progressing this off-season and showing that they can handle this offense in these extremely tight situations, the 49ers may be able to succeed with whomever Singletary decides to give the nod.
And while it is hard to put a lot of stock into what you read on OTA drills, these looks at the 49ers offense consistently moving the ball and showing that they have added some want into their diet gives me hope that we are going to see a more intense offense when the season starts.

Term Sheet Approved by Santa Clara City Council: Team Awaits Ballot Vote

In a 5-2 vote, the Santa Clara City Council approved a term sheet to bring the 49ers to the South Bay.
With only a majority vote by Santa Clara County citizens standing in the way of this proposal becoming a reality, a new stadium, and apparently a new city, seems to be in store for this storied franchise.
“The 49ers Stadium makes Santa Clara a better place to live, to work, and to play,” said Jed York. “And I think that’s very evident. I think anytime you have a deal that makes your city a better place, I think voters will vote affirmatively.”
The new stadium is said to have one of the largest lower seating bowls in the NFL, and is designed to expand to over 75,000 seats to host events like the Super Bowl. Pictures of the proposed stadium can be seen here.
The vote is going to hit the ballot sometime in 2010, but no definite date has been set.
