Seattle Seahawks 2009 NFL Regular Season Schedule

Last season was a year of pain for the Seattle Seahawks as it seemed almost every player on their team was hurt at some point during the season. Until this week, the Seahawks 2009 offseason was one of getting healthy and looking primed to compete with the Cardinals for the Western Division Title.

Unfortunately for Seattle this week, cornerback Marcus Trufant is expected to possibly start the season on the PUP list with a bad back. To make matters worse, all-pro left tackle Walter Jones is out indefinitely as his knee required another surgery. With these key losses it will be vitally important that the team excels in execution and stays injury free from here on out.

Below are three sections of interest that are worth paying attention to for fantasy owners coming into the season for this team. First we have listed our fantasy players which we believe are worth paying attention too this season. Next is strength of schedule against the run, pass, and points against. Lastly, we have a few games selected that will be key in telling how this team will preform for the 2009 season.

Fantasy Players

QB. Matt Hasselbeck
RB. Julius Jones
RB. T.J. Duckett
RB. Justin Forsett
WR. T.J. Houshmandzadeh
WR. Deion Branch
TE. John Carlson

Strength of Schedule

vs Run 10th Easiest Schedule

vs Pass 14th Easiest Schedule

vs Points Given Up Easiest Schedule in Football

If the Seahawks’ offensive line can keep quarterback Matt Hasselbeck healthy and off the turf, than this passing game is in line for a very productive season. This season Hasselbeck finally has a true No. 1 receiver in T.J. Houshmandzadeh and should thrive with other targets like Branch, Burleson, and Carlson as well.

This season Seattle has the easiest schedule on paper for points given up by the opposing defense. Hasselbeck and T.J. Duckett should benefit, as the team will have consistent opportunities to face weak defenses in the red zone. Look for T.J. Houshmandzadeh to move over double digit touchdowns this season as he will be Matt’s primary target around the goal line.

Games of Interest

Weeks 15 – 17: In the final three games of the season the Seahawks will face the Buccaneers, Packers (on the road), and Titans. If the Seahawks have any hope of winning the western title they will need to be ahead of the Cardinals before the final three games of the season.

Arizona has a very easy schedule in the final month of the season, and with Seattle playing three good teams at the end it will be hard for them to win all three contests.

2009 Football Projection

The Seahawks have the talent and veteran leadership to make the playoffs in Jim Mora Jr.’s first season as head coach with this team. But if this team can’t stay healthy and get Trufant and Jones back by mid season I don’t believe they will have a record better than 8 and 8.

2009 Strength of Schedule for NFL Teams for Win/ Loss Record

2009 NFL Season- Overall Team Strength of Schedules

I usually don’t place much stock into a teams strength of schedule when it comes to the win/loss percentage of the teams they face. Most of all strength of schedule is heavily based on how good of a season the teams in your division had.

To me it is more important to pay attention to the teams strength of schedule against the run, pass and point against. Going further then that fantasy football owners need to pay attention to the schedule for each team and see what team they face in week 17.

If you’re in a league that doesn’t play that week it would mean a team has an easier schedule or a harder one because of missing that game.

Most talk show people would never make a point of not including that week just because they are not looking at the schedule from a fantasy football perspective.

With all that being said I have taken the time to write down a few interesting things I noticed from the win/losses perspective of strength of schedule. Listed below are some notables that I have on different teams and why those teams are going to either struggle or succeed in 2009.

Surprise, Surprise the Vikings, Packers and Bears have the easiest schedules

This one is not that surprising when you consider that they are in a division that has a team that didn’t win a game for the year in the Lions. Any time you get to face two games in your schedule that has a team that went 0-16 your going to have a easier schedule then the rest.

One thing that fantasy owners need to keep in mind is that while the Bears do have the easiest schedule in football, they play one of their games against the Lions in week 17. Many fantasy football leagues don’t play the last week of the season because so many team rest their stars players for the playoffs.

With the Bears only facing the Lions one time on the fantasy schedule this will make their schedule in fantasy a little harder then it actually is.

The Vikings and Packers however will get to face the lonely Lions twice in fantasy football and this will keep stars like Adrian Peterson in line for fine seasons this up coming year.

The Dolphins have the Hardest Schedule for Football

This is a little concerning as this team does have the hardest win/loss record to face in football and they have the hardest schedule in points against. One positive for this team is that they to get to play the hardest team on their fantasy schedule in week 17.

That week they face the Steelers and this situation is a complete reverse of what the Bears will get as this will help their schedule be a bit easier with this news.

Kyle Orton is Booed in Denver Broncos Camp

Published: August 8, 2009

commentNo Comments

This week in camp Kyle Orton and a few other players have been booed during the Broncos camps for bad play. While this is the NFL and fans will boo bad plays and cheer good ones, I have to wonder if Denver fans are channeling this boo really towards the organization and it’s new head coach.

I’m not a Broncos fan and I’ve not attended these camps but Bronco fans have and have done so in record fashion this off-season. So far in camp the organization has set a new record for fans coming to a particular day of camp with 13,400 plus. This new rise in attendance could be for different reasons.

For one it could be that the fans are there because our economy is in the tank and more people have extra time on their hands, so why not go see the team at camp for a day. Another reason is that the fans could actually be very excited about the Broncos chances with their new look team on the field.

Or it could be that they aren’t happy with the organization and it’s moves this offseason, so they want to come to camp and let everyone know what they think.

It doesn’t seem to matter which way you look at this situation, no one can deny that much has changed in this organization as we move into the 2009 season.

Can the Broncos Win in 2009?

Even if Josh McDaniels is successful in turning around the offense and implementing his style into this team, it is still going to be hard for the defense to have success.

Just this morning I wrote an article for huliq.com on Brian Dawkins hand injury and the issues some vets are having with this new coaching staff. It’s is going to be hard for new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan to turn around a defense that was one of the worst in football a season ago.

With an injury to Dawkins, Champ Baliey complaining about camp, and Javris Moss now contemplating retirement, this team is destined for another bad season in defense.

Sure the Broncos do get a gift as they get to play the Raiders and Chiefs twice a season but other then that it should be a challenging season overall.

In the end I believe this team is going to need a strong start to the season and maybe more then any team in football this season. Not only are they going through a lot of change but I’m sure their are fans that will be very disgruntled if they should start slow, because of all the change.

Fantasy Football Information on the Broncos

While this team does have talent and especially on offense, right now I would recommend you drop every player on this team a round or two lower then you have them right now. Brandon Marshall has been hurt for the entire summer so far and currently is not practicing with the team this week.

He needs to show he can recover from his hype surgery before you can look to him as a receiver worth selecting in the first five rounds of your fantasy draft.

Eddie Royal needs to prove that he can get his touchdown total up this season as he needs more then five to be a star player. If your in PPR fantasy leagues he should still be solid as he will be the Wes Welker in this offense and should have over 100 catches this season.

Kyle Orton is nothing more then a backup fantasy quarterback to take at the end of your fantasy draft. Because Marshall has missed a lot of time this off-season, Kyle is missing out on valuable time to work with his No.1 receiver. This is only going to hurt his chances for success and Brandon’s as well.

As far as the Broncos Defense, all I can say is stay as far away from them as you can. This is actually going to be a defense that you will want to start your fantasy players you have against them, when they face the Broncos this year.

In the end I believe the Broncos are going to struggle this season and head coach Josh McDaniels may very well not make it to next spring as this teams head coach.

Eddie Royal Is a Fantasy PPR Stud

Published: August 7, 2009

commentNo Comments

With so much going on for the Denver Broncos this offseason, it’s easy to lose sight of what a great season Eddie Royal had in his rookie year. Last season, Royal had team rookie receiving records for 980 yards and 91 receptions.

This was a very productive year, and he makes for a fine complement to Brandon Marshall in this teams passing game.

The biggest shame to me is that we will never know what these two receivers would have done over the next five to eight years with quarterback Jay Cutler in the offense. This has to be a major disappointment to not only fantasy football owners, but especially to Broncos fans.

Eddie Royal To Be the next Wes Welker

Former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is the new head coach for the Denver Broncos. He’s implementing his offense from New England that has made Wes Welker a household name in fantasy football.

Under coach McDaniels’ system, Welker had catch totals of 112 in 2007 and 111 in 2008. It didn’t seem to matter who threw the football Welker’s way; he still posted a massive catch total for the season.

This year, Eddie won’t have Cutler. In this offense, though, one has to believe that Royal will still see many opportunities to stay active. Look for Royal to have over 100 catches in his second season in the league.

All Change Is Not Good Change

There’s no doubt there have been rifts in this organization since the team fired their old head coach and now have Josh in as captain of the ship. Jay Cutler was so ticked off about McDaniels’ entertaining offers for Matt Cassel, he ended up demanding a trade.

While that incident was bad, it hasn’t been the only issue with players that the organization has faced this offseason. Brandon Marshall is looking for a new contract. In June, he demanded a trade after a meeting with the owner of the team.

With camp starting up, Champ Bailey has been openly critical of the new coach’s way of doing things. Even the Broncos’ first-round pick from a couple years ago in Jarvis Moss has left the team and is considering retirement.

We don’t know if Moss is leaving because of the way things are going in the organization, but this is no doubt another piece of bad news in Denver.

My biggest problem for Royal’s production will probably be touchdowns. If you look at Wes Welker in the last two seasons, he had eight touchdowns with Tom Brady and only three touchdowns with Matt Cassel.

While Kyle Orton may find Royal many times for receptions, he may not be able to help him do better then his five touchdowns from a season ago.

Fantasy Football Information on Eddie Royal

Eddie’s value, much like Welker’s, is best in a points-per-reception (PPR) fantasy football league. Royal can make some big plays in the offense, but for the most part he isn’t a big play threat. That role tends to fall in Marshall’s lap in this offense.

If you are in a heavy touchdown performance league, then Royal is probably only a top 30 receiver coming into this season. If you’re in a PPR league, then you might want to consider Eddie as a top 25 or even 20 receiver this season.

At this point in time, I’m willing to say that Eddie should have a strong catch total even if the team is in turmoil this season. Drafting any Broncos players is going to be a roll of the dice, as this team is in major turmoil and it should be a problem throughout the season.

Is Robert Meachem Ready to Produce for the New Orleans Saints?

Published: August 7, 2009

commentNo Comments

It’s been a very disappointing start for receiver Robert Meachem in New Orleans so far. In Roberts first season on the team he didn’t even find his way into the football field as he played in zero contests that season.

Last season, Meachem did show flashes when Marques Colston was out, with four touchdowns (one rushing) and a blistering hot 24.1 yards per catch! Unfortunately, he only had 12 catches on the season and couldn’t be found on the field once Colston returned to the starting lineup.

This season, the Saints are expecting Robert to show the team why they drafted him as a first round pick a few seasons ago. If Meachem can’t deliver this year, then his career with this organization is probably finished.

Turning the Corner

This year, Robert is much more comfortable with the offense and understanding what it takes to have success at the NFL level. In his rookie season, he was plagued by a knee injury and couldn’t perform on the field as he wanted to.

Last year was more of a true rookie season for this young talent, as he was trying to figure out what it takes to have success as a receiver at the pro level.

In the offseason, Robert has been handed a true gift from Marques Colston and Lance Moore, as both receivers have have been limited by surgery. These two men being absent has left Meachem with an opportunity to work with the first team in OTA’s now that camp has begun.

Drew Brees has been looking for Roberts way more as time has progressed, and the young receiver is now looking sharper in his route running. Brees has even come out and complimented the young receiver for his hard work in the offseason and how he is looking better all the time.

Will Meachem Produce in 2009?

Right now, unless Moore or Colston go down with injuries, Robert won’t be a starter for this team. What I will be watching for is if he can win the No. 3 receiver spot on the team in camp this year.

If Meachem does in fact win that job, it shows that he has truly taken the next step toward becoming a fantasy relevant player in football.

Fantasy Football Information on Robert Meachem

Right now, Robert is not worth owning on a fantasy roster until he at least wins the No.3 job on the team. This is the most explosive passing offense in fantasy football and if Moore or Colston (who had micro-fracture knee surgery this offseason) should go down for awhile, then Meachem would move into the starting role.

If this talented player is truly ready to perform and gets a chance to start, then he will no doubt make a big impact in fantasy football leagues for the 2009 season. Many times it takes a receiver until that magical third year in their career to break out as a pro and I believe Robert can break out this year.

For now, keep Meachem as a name on your list of players worth picking up during the season. If he does well in spring games and wins the number three job, you might want to stash this player away in the late rounds of your fantasy football draft.

Brian St. Pierre Over Matt Leinart in Arizona: Really?

Published: August 6, 2009

commentNo Comments

This week reports out of the Arizona Cardinals camp is that head coach Ken Whisenhunt has promised third string quarterback Brian St. Pierre a chance to win the No. 2 spot. If he does in fact win this job (would be a shocker) then that would mean Matt Leinart would be the new third string quarterback on the team.

While some will say that this is another reason that Leinart is a bust, I don’t believe that to be the case at all. The Cardinals head coach is not shy from benching or challenging his star names in his organization. Last year he benched Edgerrin James because he believed that James was not producing the way he should.

Coach Wiz then gave Edge the job back in week 17 and he responded well and took that momentum into the playoffs.

Pushing a Star Talent to Success

Most great talents do not need to have a challenge from their coaches to be very good in this league. For Matt Leinart this has not been the case as he has not seemed to carry himself as a true pro, until this offseason.

Last month Cardinals starting quarterback Kurt Warner and Coach Wiz both came out on separate occasions to compliment Matt for his new dedication and performance this off-season.
They told the press that this young man had turned the corner and was now doing all the things one needs to do in order to succeed at this level.

When Whisenhunt was asked about the St. Pierre and Leinart situation he even went out and said it was a “none story.”

This leads me to believe that while the coach may have told Pierre that he would have a chance to compete, it’s not really actually going to happen. That is as long as Leinart keeps preforming the way he has this year so far.

Fantasy Football Information on Matt Leinart

Look for this report to be a complete wash as soon as Matt shows the media that he has improved in the spring games. Leinart is now heading into his 4th season in the league and I believe you are going to start see the player we all expected coming out of USC.

In the end Leinart’s fantasy football value is very low as he is not a starter in the NFL right now. But he does make for a very nice stash away if you happen to own Kurt Warner in this year fantasy draft.

If Warner goes down for awhile, start Matt in your fantasy league with confidence as he will keep your quarterback position scoring good points in this high powered offense.

Devin Thomas to Push Antwaan Randle El for Washington Redskins WR Spot

Published: August 5, 2009

commentNo Comments

The buzz out of Washington is that Devin Thomas is ready to push Antwaan Randle El for the start the No. 2 starting spot on the team. This move would be a wise one for the Redskins as it would give them a big receiver (6’2″, 218 pounds) to start opposite of the undersized Santana Moss.

Antwaan Randle El is still a valuable player for his team but he would be best used in the slot as his game is better suited for that position on the field.

Devin Thomas was thought of by many to be the most talented receiver to come out of last years draft. That might not be saying much as there wasn’t a signal receiver taken in the first round of last years draft. However, I believe in part that was because the NFL was coming off one of the biggest statistical seasons for receivers in NFL history.

With so many receivers having good or great seasons most team didn’t have receiver as a top priority coming into that particular draft.

Can Devin Make an Impact as a Starter This Year?

If Devin does in fact win the starting job I do believe he will help this football team out a good deal in his first starting season. This team has needed a wide out like this since maybe as far back as when they lost Art Monk.

For those of you that are young to football that is going a long way back in the books for an organization as heralded as this one.

This season Jason Campbell’s starting career is on the line and I expect him to be on the top of his game like never before. I love the way Jason handled all the trade rumors when the team was making a play for Broncos then quarterback Jay Cutler.

But that is not the only time that Campbell has had to deal with the organization placing heat on him as they have openly doubted if this quarterback is the right man to start for this team.

Even just today their are reports that the team is considering making a passable play for ex-convict Michael Vick.

While it may seem that the Redskins have no faith in Jason I believe it is just the opposite (for now anyway) as I believe they are doing all this to push this young quarterback to being better.

Look for Jason and his receivers to come out of the gates firing away as they play the Rams and Lions in two of their first three contests for the season. True they do play the New York Giants in week one but those other games are primed for Jason and Devin to put some numbers up.

Thomas and Campbell while they are not going to be fantasy football starters for your team are good options during the bye weeks this year. The will face a few match ups in that time that are worth exploring if your in a pinch for a starter.

With games like the Chiefs, Falcons, and Broncos on the docket you will have a chance to use these players in key situations to help for fantasy team stay afloat.

Fantasy Football Information for Devin Thomas

Look for Devin to win the job out of camp if he continues to shine on the field and in the film room. This receiver has turned a complete 180 and is now taking his career serious and becoming a professional.

Thomas has the speed to make big plays in the passing game and the size to score inside the red zone.

Assuming Thomas does in fact win the job look for him as a very nice late round sleeper or early season pickup for your 2009 fantasy football team.

Colts Receiver Anthony Gonzalez is Ready to Start

Published: August 4, 2009

commentNo Comments

Much has changed in Indianapolis since Anthony Gonzalez was drafted in the first round back in 2007 out of Ohio State. The most notable change and important for that matter is that Marvin Harrison is no longer with the Colts organization.

While it is kind of sad to know we won’t see the Peyton Manning to Marvin Harrison connection again on the field, one has to believe the Colts will have success again in 2009.

This success was threatened by the losses of offensive line coach Howard Mudd and offensive coordinator Tom Moore, as they both retired in May.

But the team hired them back as contractors and the NFL has officially informed all teams that coordinators can do whatever they please on game day.

With this news now understood, the Colts will now be able to run their offense without having to lean on Manning to do everything.

Can Anthony Gonzalez fill Harrison’s shoes?

The big question for this offense now is if the third-year receiver can succeed in the starting role?

To that question I say, the Colts had best hope this kid is ready to be a success this season. Defenses are going to focus their attention on Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark in this offense every week.

This will leave Anthony in single coverage often, as defensive coordinators will make Gonzalez prove he can hurt them.

If Gonzalez can’t get the job done, it will make the rest of the offense suffer this season. Fantasy football owners with Manning, Wayne and Clark will be feeling a pinch in production, as the team will have a harder time moving the football in the passing game.

With all that said, I don’t think this poor production will happen, as I believe Anthony is ready to step up and produce for this team.

Gonzalez is clearly not the talent that future hall of fame receiver Marvin Harrison was, but he is a solid player. Look for Anthony to be a player that makes around 85 catches a year for 1, 100, and 8 touchdowns in this offense.

No doubt most of the big plays down the field will still lay in the hands of Pro Bowl receiver Reggie Wayne as he is better suited for down the field passes.

Gonzalez will be a more of a possession type receiver on this team as the year moves along.

Fantasy Football Information on Anthony Gonzalez

Right now, Anthony is going in the mid-rounds of many fantasy mock drafts this summer. This is good value for a receiver with talent that will start on a Peyton Manning offense.

Look for the Colts to get Anthony off to a hot start in the first month of the season, if defenses do in fact try to shut down Wayne and Clark.

In the end, Gonzalez makes for a very fine No. 3 receiver for your fantasy football team in 2009.

Brett Favre Wins for Biggest Douche Bag of the Year!

Published: July 28, 2009

commentNo Comments

I can’t believe this guy actually put the Minnesota Vikings (and everyone else for that matter) through all this, and ended up staying retired. I used to like Brett Favre and will always remember the way he played with the Packers.

This guy just loves to get his name in the press and can’t get enough of it. True, the NFL is a business and at the end of the day a player or team has the right to part ways if they want to.

That being said, business or no business, Brett’s been coming out and toying with the media this entire time. This guy has become probably the biggest douche bag known to mankind (well maybe Jose Canseco is first). At the end of the day, Favre is just a selfish jerk.

I wonder if this guy backed out in recent days as the Vikings’ players have been putting pressure on him to sign. Hopefully someone on the Vikings will come out and rip this guy for putting the entire organization through this mess and then saying no.

Packers Conspiracy Theory

Or maybe all of this was planned the entire time…

Brett Favre is maybe the most popular Packer of all time, and that is saying a lot for this organization.

There is also no denying that the Packers and Vikings do not get along. They are, in fact, division rivals.

This situation could be interpreted a little differently, as Brett and the Packers may have planned all along to drive the Vikings crazy with all this media attention, and then at the end pull the string and say, “Sorry.”

There is no doubt that the Vikings needed Brett Favre because they only have Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson as quarterbacks.

Will Michael Vick Go to the Vikings?

With Brett Favre now gone, maybe the Vikings will make a move for Michael Vick. This team needs a quarterback and Vick has given the Vikings fits in the past.

It will be an interesting situation in Minnesota either way.

Fantasy Football Information for the Vikings’ Offense

Everyone on the Vikings’ offense is less valuable without Favre on the team. With Favre, defenses would have needed to respect the pass and Adrian Peterson would of had bigger holes to run through.

Now, Adrian is probably still the No. 1 pick in fantasy football, but he will have to do it the hard way. It’s how he’s done it the last two seasons.

Bernard Berrian is the only wide receiver you should be looking for at this point in time. Berrian would have been a hands down top five round pick with Favre on the team. But now I could see him drop as far as the mid rounds of fantasy football drafts.

In the end this is a sad day for Vikings fans who no doubt have waited for Favre to announce he would play for the team. For him to lead this organization around the way he has and then say no, makes me sick.

Favre, you are a douche bag and a jerk!

Fantasy Football Info: DeSean Jackson is a Rising Fantasy Star

Published: July 24, 2009

commentNo Comments

Last year DeSean Jackson proved why he should have been a first round draft pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Many fantasy football leagues didn’t even draft Jackson as he quickly became a hot pickup before the second week of the season.

While DeSean is a very talented player I can’t fault teams for passing on a player that was so undersized coming into the draft. Jackson stands in at a small frame at 5’10 and only 175 pounds. With a frame this small it has to make people wonder if he could take consistent punishment at the pro level and still stay in the game.

With twenty two receptions in his first four games of the season, with 5.5 receptions a game average, Jackson showed us all that he was up to the challenge of playing in the NFL.

While Jackson’s rookie season was a success, some would argue that this success happened even before the season began. Until DeSean came along, head coach Andy Reid was open about his feelings of rookie receivers not being starters in the NFL, but once he saw Jackson in OTA’s and in spring training games, he knew this kid was ready to start right away.

Not only did Jackson start for the Eagles, he was also their most productive receiver and top play maker in the passing game.

Beyond his success on offense, DeSean also proved to be a dangerous weapon for the special teams game, and fantasy owners with the Eagles D/ST, as he excelled in returning the football.

Taking Another Step in 2009

This off-season the Eagles have been raving about how good DeSean has looked so far. Jackson has had the best camp of all the receivers and that includes first round pick Jeremy Maclin.

With plans to expand Jackson’s role in the offense it has lead some in the Eagles’ camp to consider using Maclin as the return man. This would allow Jackson to work only as a receiver as he is the unquestioned No.1 receiver on the team.

For my money I would welcome Jackson leaving the return game as I believe it would allow DeSean to become a more productive fantasy football receiver for the ’09 season and years to come.

While I do believe that Jackson is primed to improve on his rookie totals of 62 receptions and 912 yards receiving, I do wonder just how many touchdowns he will have.

Jackson only totaled two receiving touchdowns last season and with his smaller frame he might never be a good option for six in this league.

Granted the weeks he does scoring it will be big if you are in a fantasy league that give points for the distance of the touchdown and not just six points no matter the distance. But as we found out last year if Jackson does in fact struggle in this department, it will leave fantasy owners a little frustrated from week to week.

Another style of league that Jackson could end up being more profitable then standard leagues is in PPR (points per receipt ion) leagues. I view DeSean as a strong option to put up eighty plus receipt ions every season from now on as long as Donovan McNabb is on the field.

Fantasy Football Information for DeSean Jackson

At this point in time I truly believe that you need to understand your league scoring rules to evaluate this receiver for your league. As mentioned before I see Jackson as a nice strong No.2 receiver,in twelve team leagues, for your fantasy football team in leagues with performance based touchdowns and PPR leagues.

As for more standard scoring formats he is probably just a very standard No. 3 receiver for your team.

At this point in time we all need to see Jackson convert a higher amount of touchdowns and be consistent with his scoring before he can truly be a top 15 fantasy receiver for the 2010 season and beyond.
